In the program of VIENNA ART WEEK 2026 | Navigating Angst

At the performance and exhibition Cathérine Lehnerer, Anne Altmeyer and Lisa Rosetta Hartmann will take us on a journey in the labyrinthian realm of the creature from Franz Kafka’s story „The Burrow”.

For the creature angst becomes its life dominating concern, as the actual hunter starts to feel hunted and starts digging deeper and deeper into its burrow. Its supposed safe space becomes a prison, while the creature starts to loose itself in its underground maze of angst. ,Navigating Angst’ becomes a never ending self serving purpose, especially, when the creature declares angst to a fetish. Furthermore ,Navigating Angst’ turns from a symbolic to a concrete image.

At the live performance based on Kafka’s story a Sonic Comic emerges, illustrated by Cathérine Lehnerer in the style of a graphic novel on the glass windows in the showcase of Atelier Moos. The act of painting is accompanied by electronic sound art with narrative elements from Anne Altmeyer. Lisa Rosetta Hartmann’s photographies, as part of the exhibition and spatial installation, of prepared carefully exposed and vetted small animals, resembling the small animals, which are eaten and gathered by Kafka’s creature, complement the story from another point of view. They not only comment on, what is left out of focus, while navigating angst, but also comment on the relationship between humans and their environment. An acknowledgment and repair of an irretrievable future. Supplementary comic zines about Kafka’s story made by the artists are shown in the exhibition, making the process of working with the literature tangible.

As a reflexive momentum a comic zine workshop will take place, on Sunday, November 8, 14.00-16.00, as part of the exhibition program, in im Atelier Moos.
